Acts
- ACTS 20:29
I know that after my departure, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock.
- [PROPHECY] After my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves (Paul to Ephesian elders) → HISTORY: Within about 50 years, false teachers troubled the church at Ephesus. Ignatius warned about them about AD 110, and Irenaeus tells of the false teacher Cerinthus there.
- ACTS 20:30
Even from your own number, men will rise up and distort the truth to draw away disciples after them.
1 Timothy
- 1TI 4:1
Now the Spirit expressly states that in later times some will abandon the faith to follow deceitful spirits and the teachings of demons,
- [PROPHECY] In latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons... forbidding to marry, commanding to abstain from foods → HISTORY: By about AD 120 to 180, groups like the Encratites and followers of Marcion banned marriage and meat. Recorded by Irenaeus, Against Heresies 1.24 and 1.28.

2 Timothy
- 2TI 3:1
But understand this: In the last days terrible times will come.
- [PROPHECY] In the last days perilous times will come. Men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God → HISTORY: This describes a pattern, not one event. Christians in every age, including our own, have seen these traits grow in the world and even in the church. MEDIUM
- 2TI 3:2
For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,
- 2TI 3:3
unloving, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, without love of good,
- 2TI 3:4
traitorous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,
- 2TI 3:5
having a form of godliness but denying its power. Turn away from such as these!
- 2TI 4:3
For the time will come when men will not tolerate sound doctrine, but with itching ears they will gather around themselves teachers to suit their own desires.
- [PROPHECY] The time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but heap up teachers according to their own desires → HISTORY: An early example is Marcion, who cut the Bible down to fit his own ideas and was put out of the church in Rome about AD 144. - [PROPHECY] There will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them... many will follow their destructive ways → HISTORY: False teachers soon spread, like the Gnostics Irenaeus wrote against about AD 180.
