Bible Apps Put the Bible in Every Pocket
On July 10, 2008, the day Apple opened its App Store, the YouVersion Bible App went live with 15 versions. By 2025 it had been downloaded about a billion times, and the Bible, already the bestselling book in history, fit in almost every pocket on earth.
Read it in the Bible: Deuteronomy 6:6 to 9 Psalm 119:11 Romans 10:17 Isaiah 55:11
In 2008 the Bible went mobile. On July 10, 2008, the first day of Apple's App Store, a free Bible app from YouVersion was there and ready to download. It was installed about 83,000 times in its first weekend. By late 2025 YouVersion was celebrating about one billion downloads, with the Bible in more than 2,300 languages. Together with many other Bible apps and websites, it put the bestselling book of all time into the pocket of anyone with a phone.
How Did the YouVersion Bible App Start?
Bobby Gruenewald was a tech minded pastor at Life.Church, a large church based in Oklahoma. In October 2006, while waiting in a security line at Chicago's O'Hare Airport, he had an idea. What if the Bible could be read and shared online as easily as everything else on the internet?
YouVersion started as a website in 2007. It did not take off the way he hoped. Then Apple announced it would open an App Store for the iPhone. The team rebuilt YouVersion as a phone app, and it launched on the App Store's very first day with 15 Bible versions in English and Spanish.
That timing turned out to be a big deal. Most people would not sit at a computer to read the Bible. But a lot of people would read it on the phone they already carried everywhere.
How Many People Use Bible Apps?
YouVersion reached 500 million downloads in November 2021 and announced about one billion in late 2025. It now offers thousands of Bible versions, reading plans, audio Bibles and a children's Bible app. Its menus come in about 70 languages.
YouVersion is not alone. Other Bible apps and websites let people search, compare translations and study Greek and Hebrew words with a tap. Things that once needed a library and a seminary degree now take seconds.
How Many Bibles Have Been Printed?
Even before phones, the Bible was far ahead of every other book. Guinness World Records lists the Bible as the bestselling book in history, with an estimate of more than 5 billion copies. Its 2021 figures, from the British and Foreign Bible Society, say the true total probably lies between 5 and 7 billion. Around 80 million new copies are still printed every year.
Apps do not count in those numbers. If they did, the total would be off the charts. Not bad for a book written by shepherds, fishermen, kings and a tax collector.
Is Reading the Bible on a Phone Okay?
Some people worry that reading on a phone is less holy than reading from a leather Bible. It is a fair feeling. A printed Bible has no notifications, and nobody has ever gotten a text in the middle of Psalm 23 on paper.
But God's people have always used new tools to spread His word. Scribes copied scrolls. Christians were early adopters of the codex, the first book with pages. Gutenberg's printing press helped spark the Reformation. Luther used the newest technology of his day to put the Bible in the hands of farmers. Every step made Scripture easier to reach.
The Bible itself says God's word should be everywhere in daily life, at home, on the road, morning and night.
These words I am commanding you today are to be upon your hearts. And you shall teach them diligently to your children and speak of them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Deuteronomy 6:6 to 7
A phone is just a very small road.
What Does This Have to Do With Bible Tech Support?
That is where the name of this site comes from. Bible Tech Support exists to help people actually understand the Bible they already have on their phones. Having the Bible in your pocket is one thing. Knowing that Isaiah 53 describes the cross about 700 years early, or that an archaeologist found the name of King David on a stone, is another.
The Owner's Manual, the free study Bible on this site, uses colors to show prophecy, fulfillment, archaeology, miracles and the bloodline of Jesus. You can read it online, download it, and compare it with other translations right here. Think of it as tech support for the most important book in your phone.
Why Do Bible Apps Matter for You?
For most of history, owning a Bible was expensive, and many people could not read. Today most people on earth can open Scripture in their own language for free, in seconds. That is a gift earlier generations prayed for.
I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin against You. Psalm 119:11
The app is only the first step, though. The goal is not to have the Bible on your phone. It is to have it in your heart. So the next time you pick up your phone, maybe open the Bible before the news. Your blood pressure will thank you.
Consequently, faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. Romans 10:17
