Adam and Eve and the Fall

The serpent tempted Eve, and Adam and Eve ate from the one tree God had forbidden. Sin and death entered the world. But in the same chapter God promised a Redeemer who would crush the serpent's head, and He clothed them with skins.

Read it in the Bible: Genesis 3:1-24 Romans 5:12-19 1 Corinthians 15:21-22 Revelation 12:9

The Fall is the moment in Genesis 3 when Adam and Eve disobeyed God by eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. It happened soon after creation, in the Garden of Eden. It matters because the Bible says this is how sin and death entered the world. It also matters because, in the very same chapter, God makes the first promise of a Savior.

What Happened in the Garden of Eden?

God gave Adam and Eve a whole garden full of good trees. There was only one rule. Do not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, because the day you eat from it you will die. That is a lot of yes and only one no.

Then the serpent shows up. He starts with a question, "Did God really say?" Then he goes for a flat denial.

“You will not surely die,” the serpent told the woman. “For God knows that in the day you eat of it, your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” Genesis 3:4 to 5

Notice the trick. He makes God look stingy, like He is holding out on them. That is still how temptation works today.

When the woman saw that the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eyes, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom, she took the fruit and ate it. She also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate it. Genesis 3:6

Adam was right there with her the whole time. So the blame does not land only on Eve, which is why the New Testament usually names Adam as the one through whom sin came.

Who Was the Serpent?

Genesis just calls him the serpent, the most crafty of the animals. Later Scripture pulls back the curtain. Revelation 12:9 calls Satan "that ancient serpent," and Jesus calls the devil a liar and the father of lies in John 8:44. So Christians have always understood that a real enemy was speaking through the serpent.

Was the Forbidden Fruit an Apple?

The Bible never says it was an apple. It just says fruit. The apple idea probably came later from Latin, where the word for evil, malum, looks a lot like the word for apple. So the apple has been taking the blame for centuries, and it may be totally innocent.

What Was the Curse After the Fall?

Right after they ate, Adam and Eve felt shame and hid. Then God came looking for them.

But Yahweh God called out to the man, “Where are you?” Genesis 3:9

God knew where they were. The question was an invitation to come out and be honest. Instead, Adam blamed Eve, and Eve blamed the serpent. Humans have been passing the blame ever since.

Then God spoke the consequences:

  • To the serpent: it would crawl in the dust, and there would be war between its seed and the woman's seed.
  • To the woman: pain in childbirth and struggle in marriage.
  • To the man: the ground would be cursed, and work would become sweat and thorns.
  • To both: they would return to the dust. Death had come into the world.

Finally, they were sent out of the garden, and an angel guarded the way to the tree of life.

What Is the First Messianic Prophecy?

Right in the middle of the curse on the serpent, God slips in a promise. Christians have called it the first gospel, or the Protoevangelium.

And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” Genesis 3:15

A son of the woman would come. The serpent would wound him, but He would crush the serpent's head. A heel wound hurts. A head wound ends things. Christians see this fulfilled in Jesus, who was wounded on the cross but defeated Satan there. It is the first entry on the Messianic Prophecies list on this site, and the whole rest of the Bible follows that promised seed.

Why Did God Clothe Adam and Eve With Skins?

Adam and Eve tried to cover themselves with fig leaves. That did not go well. Then God did it for them.

And Yahweh God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and He clothed them. Genesis 3:21

To make garments of skin, an animal had to die. Many Christians see this as the first picture of sacrifice: something innocent dies so that guilty people can be covered. It points ahead to the lambs of Passover and finally to Jesus, the Lamb of God. Human effort gives fig leaves. God gives a real covering.

How Does the Fall Point to Jesus?

Paul explains the Fall by putting Adam and Jesus side by side.

Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, so also death was passed on to all men, because all sinned. Romans 5:12
For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. 1 Corinthians 15:22

Christians have explained the details in different ways. Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant churches all teach that the Fall affected every person, though they describe how sin is passed on a little differently. But they agree on the big picture. Adam's disobedience brought ruin, and Jesus' obedience brings rescue, as Romans 5:19 says.

That is why Genesis 3 matters for you today. It explains why the world is broken and why you do things you know are wrong. But it also shows that God's first move after sin was not to walk away. He came looking. He asked, "Where are you?" He made a promise, and He made a covering. He is still doing that.

Questions People Ask

What was the first sin in the Bible?

The first sin was Adam and Eve eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, the one tree God told them not to eat from. It is recorded in Genesis 3. At its root it was not trusting God and wanting to be like God on their own terms.

What does Genesis 3:15 mean?

Genesis 3:15 is God's promise that a son of the woman would crush the serpent's head, while the serpent would strike his heel. Christians have long seen it as the first prophecy of Jesus, who was wounded on the cross but defeated Satan there. It is often called the first gospel.

Was the forbidden fruit an apple?

The Bible never names the fruit. The apple idea likely came later in Latin, where the word for evil, malum, sounds like the word for apple. Genesis simply calls it the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Why were Adam and Eve sent out of the garden?

Genesis 3:22 to 24 says God sent them out so they would not eat from the tree of life and live forever in their fallen state. An angel guarded the way back. Revelation 22 shows the tree of life again, open to God's people in the new creation.
