Jacob's Ladder, Twelve Sons and a New Name: Israel

Running from Esau, Jacob dreamed of a stairway to heaven at Bethel, and God renewed Abraham's promise to him. In Haran he married Leah and Rachel and had twelve sons, who became the twelve tribes. On the way home he wrestled with God and was renamed Israel.

Read it in the Bible: Genesis 28:10-22 Genesis 29:1-35 Genesis 30:1-24 Genesis 32:22-32 Genesis 35:1-29 Genesis 49:8-12 John 1:51

When Jacob fled from his brother Esau, by the traditional count about 1929 BC, he slept on a stone at a place he named Bethel and dreamed of a stairway reaching to heaven. God promised to be with him. Jacob spent twenty years in Haran working for his uncle Laban, who tricked him into marrying Leah before Rachel. He had twelve sons, who became the twelve tribes of Israel. On his way home, Jacob wrestled all night with God and received a new name, Israel. Through his son Judah came King David and, later, Jesus.

What Was Jacob's Ladder?

Jacob was alone, running for his life, with a rock for a pillow. Then God gave him a dream.

And Jacob had a dream about a ladder that rested on the earth with its top reaching up to heaven, and God’s angels were going up and down the ladder. Genesis 28:12

The word can also mean a stairway or ramp, and some think it looked like the steps of a ziggurat. Above it stood Yahweh, who repeated the promises He had made to Abraham and Isaac: the land, the family and the blessing for all nations. Then He added a personal promise.

Look, I am with you, and I will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” Genesis 28:15

Jacob woke up and said, "Surely Yahweh is in this place, and I was unaware of it." He named the place Bethel, which means "house of God." Jesus later said He is the true connection between heaven and earth.

Then He declared, “Truly, truly, I tell you, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.” John 1:51

How Did Jacob Marry Leah and Rachel?

In Haran, Jacob met Rachel at a well and fell in love on the spot. He agreed to work seven years for her father, Laban.

So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, yet it seemed but a few days because of his love for her. Genesis 29:20

On the wedding night, Laban secretly swapped in Rachel's older sister, Leah. With the veil and the dark, Jacob did not notice until morning.

When morning came, there was Leah! “What have you done to me?” Jacob said to Laban. “Wasn’t it for Rachel that I served you? Why have you deceived me?” Genesis 29:25

The deceiver got deceived. Jacob had tricked his blind father in the dark, and now he was tricked in the dark himself. Laban let him marry Rachel a week later, in exchange for seven more years of work. In all, Jacob served Laban twenty years, and Laban changed his wages ten times, in Genesis 31:41.

Who Were the Twelve Sons of Jacob?

Jacob loved Rachel more than Leah, and the rivalry between the sisters shows up in the names they gave their children. Here are the twelve sons by their mothers:

  • Leah: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun. Leah also had a daughter, Dinah.
  • Bilhah, Rachel's servant: Dan and Naphtali.
  • Zilpah, Leah's servant: Gad and Asher.
  • Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.

Rachel died giving birth to Benjamin on the road to Bethlehem, in Genesis 35:19. These twelve sons became the fathers of the twelve tribes of Israel. Levi became the priestly tribe, and Joseph's two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, each became a tribe. That is why lists of the tribes can look a little different in different places.

Why Did Jacob Wrestle With God?

After twenty years, God told Jacob to go home. But Esau was coming to meet him with 400 men, and Jacob was terrified. He sent his family across the Jabbok River and stayed behind alone.

So Jacob was left all alone, and there a man wrestled with him until daybreak. Genesis 32:24

The man could not overpower Jacob, so he touched Jacob's hip and put it out of joint. Still Jacob held on.

Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” Genesis 32:26

Jacob had spent his whole life grabbing for the blessing. Now, finally, he was asking for it from the right Person. Hosea 12:4 says he wept and sought God's favor. Jacob named the place Peniel, "face of God," because he said he had seen God face to face and lived. Many Christians believe the man was God appearing in human form, possibly the Son before He was born in Bethlehem.

What Does the Name Israel Mean?

Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men, and you have prevailed.” Genesis 32:28

Israel means "he struggles with God" or "God strives." The heel grabber became the God wrestler. He walked away limping for the rest of his life, a reminder that he had met God. God confirmed the new name again at Bethel in Genesis 35:10. From then on, his family was called the children of Israel, and later the whole nation took his name.

Why Is Judah Important?

Judah was Leah's fourth son. He was not the firstborn, and he made some big mistakes, but he grew. At the end of Genesis, Jacob blessed each son, and he gave Judah a royal promise.

The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the staff from between his feet, until Shiloh comes and the allegiance of the nations is his. Genesis 49:10

King David came from the tribe of Judah, and so did Jesus, who is called "the Lion of the tribe of Judah" in Revelation 5:5. The Messianic Prophecies list on this site includes this verse.

Why Jacob's Story Matters for You Today

Jacob was a schemer from birth. But God met him at his lowest point, alone with a rock for a pillow, and promised never to leave him. God kept that promise through twenty hard years. Then God wrestled the old Jacob out of him and gave him a new name.

God still does that. He meets people when they are running. He stays with them through hard years. And in Jesus, the true ladder between heaven and earth, He gives them a new identity. You might walk with a limp, but you walk away blessed.
